Lance King - A Moment In Chiros

Lance King - A Moment In ChirosPatrick: Lance King, the former vocalist of Avian, Balance Of Power and Pyramaze and founder of Nightmare Records, decided at the end of June (2011) to make a solo album and as theme he wanted to focus on the 11:11 concept. Some pressure instantly arose - as the album was to be released at 11/11/2011 - so Lance gathered in the shortest time a lot of people. Think for example of names such as Jacob Hansen (Anubis Gate, Beyond Twilight, Invocator), Tore St Moren (Jorn), Markus Sigfridsson (Darkwater, Harmony), Kevin Codfert (Adagio), Malek Ben Arabia (Myrath) and many more. And they pulled it off: within a period of less than three months ‘A Moment In Chiros’ was written, recorded, mixed and mastered.

Although he has already released 25 albums, ‘A Moment In Chiros’ is King’s first solo effort. Given the bands he was previously present in and the names that have contributed, it is not surprising that ‘A Moment In Chiros’ became a mix of progressive and power metal. Although the smooth, accessible power metal - that is interspersed with layers of keyboards and progressive influences - still reminds of some of King's other acts such as Balance of Power and Pyramaze, there are also enough differences to be heard. Perhaps most important is that tracks like ‘Awakening’, ‘Manifest Destiny’ and ‘Infinity Divine’ turn out quite lighter. Maybe you can say that the album takes a little step towards rock and progressive metal. Although the songs are all well composed and the vocals by King are varied and rich, ‘A Moment In Chiros' does affect me only a little. Maybe it is a lack of emotion, maybe the concept of the lyrics are an obstacle for me (11:11 is to be about 1111 jolly angels that people constantly refer to times like 11:11, 22:22 and thus humanity consciously resort to a new era of ‘edification’, which it is to come). I have nothing with that theme, but the fact that King donates the benefit of the album to (Not For Sale, an anti-trafficking organization) is something that I find admirable!

‘Chiros In A Moment’ is an album that qualitatively is well composed and fans of bands such as Masterplan, Myrath, Redemption and Symphony X should definitely give the album at least a listen. Maybe it knows to touch you after all.
